The Sheer Brilliance of Torkil Gudnason

Posted by Foto Care | Posted in Photographers

I have been watching the stellar photographic career of photographer Torkil Gudnason for many years dating back to the early ’90s. When I first learned of his work it was his lighting that grabbed my attention–his images were so beautifully light, understated, but bold and elegant at the same time. I could easily spot his images be it in an editorial spread, an ad or high-end catalog. Over the years the one quality of his work that has come through loud and clear for me is his sheer brilliance as a contemporary image maker. He is always pushing for something new and different yet maintains an elegance and sophistication that is sensual, provocative and full of emotion. I love his experimental work, his fine art and his commercial photography. Here is an sample of Torkil Gudnason’s photographic mind at work (and play):

Torkil Gudnason’s work includes Vogue, Harpers Bazaar,Elle, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Surface, City, Stiletto Magazine, Elizabeth Arden, Maybeline, Pantene, Mac Cosmetics, L’Oreal, Piaget, Guerlain, Shiseido, Estee Lauder, Calvin Klein & Bergdorff Goodman.

The Development of VMRelease™

Created by Tom McGhee, international advertising and commercial photographer, VMRelease™ was an idea from a professional with many years of experience.  Tom began his career in the early 1990’s in London, getting his first assisting jobs with some of the top photographers.  This gave him the chance to learn about the industry and the business of professional photography.  The years of experience gave him the chance to establish himself as a photographer as well as create a successful design company, Tomsuey Inc., with design partner Suzanne McGhee.

The idea for VMRelease™ came one day in September of 2009 while Tom was scanning and organizing model release agreements in his studio. Frustrated of the tedious process of scanning, transferring, archiving, matching to the image…looking down at his iPhone 3GS he began to wonder, is there an app that can save me from this mundane task?  The answer was no, so he began his research in application development.

The months ahead entailed ideas, design, finding an app developer and finally promotion.  Tom and Sue found the application developer they wanted, Peter Neufeld of Door3 in New York City.  With Door3 they began creating screenshots of all the layouts they needed; capture with image transfer, customized legal release forms and the biggest hurdle being able to get signatures directly on the mobile device (without a stylus).  At the time Peter developed several successful, amazingly designed apps that caught the eye of Tom and Sue, so it was a perfect match.

What you got in the end was an extremely creative, practical app for the photography/film industry that can’t be resisted.  The official US launch took place last year at PDN’s Photo Plus in NYC; giving them the opportunity to show the industry the newest in model release forms.  The event was extremely successful, more than they could have imaged, and the app took off.  The VMRelease is currently accepted worldwide as a legal release document.

VM Release™ is with you when you need it!

New York photographer, Bruce Gilden began observing urban culture long before taking a photograph.  With growing curiosity of his surroundings he created his first project on the intimacy of the sensual, all types of bodies sprawled across the beach of Coney Island.  Now after many years of being a Magnum photographer, Gilden is working on his current project; No Place Like Home: Foreclosures in America.  For two years he has been documenting the lives of the ones who have been hit the hardest.

Now he needs the help of others for the continuation of this project.  Gilden has become a part of a wonderful website called Kickstarter, an online funding community for creative and innovative people.  Kickstarter has enabled tens of thousands of creative people to continue their projects, all from supplying a place to share their work.  So far, Gilden has been able to raise more than 50% of his goal.
